West High IB students combine rigorous academics with independent research, career preparation, creativity, service, and leadership. Their accomplishments reflect the many ways students can thrive through an IB education.

Independent Research

Extended Essay and Reflective Project topics demonstrate the breadth of West students' academic, personal, and career interests. Students investigate questions across literature, language, history, science, mathematics, the arts, and career-related ethical issues.

Student Recognitions

West students earn local, state, national, and international recognition across academic disciplines, career and technical education, service, leadership, and the arts. Recent highlights provided by the IB coordinator include:

Business and Career Leadership

  • In 2026, fourteen DECA students earned first-, second-, and third-place finishes at the regional conference.
  • Six West students won first place at the 2026 State DECA Competition and qualified for international competition.

Health Science

  • In 2026, 56 students qualified for international competition through the state HOSA conference, including 26 first-place finishers.
  • Three West students were selected as state HOSA officers.

Mathematics and Computer Science

  • West won the 2026 state MathCounts competition for the second consecutive year.
  • Three of Utah's four positions at the national MathCounts competition were earned by West students.

Science and Engineering

  • The junior and senior Science Olympiad teams each won first place at the 2026 state competition and qualified for nationals.
  • Junior Olivia Jiang was named a 2026 National STEM Champion, an honor awarded to only 55 students nationwide.
  • Senior Aadhi Umamageswaren was selected as a 2026 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar.

Performing and Visual Arts

  • More than thirty West choir students performed at Carnegie Hall in 2026.
  • West students earned first-, third-, and fifth-place finishes at the 2026 State Theatre Competition.
  • Fifteen students received awards at the 2026 district art show, including four Best in Show recognitions.

Leadership, Debate, and Civic Engagement

  • West's junior Mock Trial team completed an undefeated 2026 season and won the state championship.
  • Junior Bianka Chavez was selected as the student member of the Salt Lake City School District Board of Education.
  • West students continued to qualify for the national Debate Tournament of Champions.

Scholarships and Academic Honors

  • Twelve West students were named 2026 National Merit Scholarship finalists.
  • Eleven students were selected as 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars candidates, the highest number from one Utah school.
  • Eight students were named 2026 Sterling Scholar finalists, including a category winner in Social Science.
