West High Senior Ivan Turan Recognized for Pothole AI Innovation
West High is proud to celebrate senior Ivan Turan, whose Pothole AI app was featured by KSL on October 13. His work shows how curiosity and persistence can turn an everyday challenge into an opportunity to help others.
Ivan taught himself the AI skills needed to build an app that identifies potholes in real time, records their locations and captures images of road damage. His project earned recognition at the 2026 National STEM Festival, where he was one of 10 Utah finalists.
According to KSL, Ivan presented Pothole AI to Utah Department of Transportation teams on September 24, and the department is now testing the app. He hopes to make reporting road damage more efficient and help improve road safety.
Congratulations, Ivan! Your initiative, creativity and commitment to solving real-world problems give our Panther community plenty to celebrate.
