Welcome to West High!

At West High, we are a community where all students and families are empowered to collaborate with confidence and dignity to create a better world. West High is a place of belonging for everyone. We offer a wide range of opportunities for our students, including Athletics, our IB Program, AP Classes, CTE Pathways, West High Clubs, extracurricular activities, and much more.

The first step in enrolling is determining which process applies to your student. The three options are:

  1. West High Boundary Families

  2. Families Outside of West High Boundaries

  3. Magnet Gifted & Talented (7th & 8th Grades)

Once you know which enrollment process applies, click on the corresponding tab below. To find out whether your student lives within West High boundaries, use the Address Verification link and enter the student’s address in the search bar at the top right of the page.

Please note: If you are enrolling your student from another school, proof of withdrawal from their previous school will be required.

  • Step 1: Complete Online Registration (Required)

All parents and guardians must complete Online Registration for their student’s enrollment. This process collects contact information, emergency contacts, checkout permissions, and confirms acknowledgment of school policies, including dress code, attendance, school fee waivers, and lunch programs. Online Registration must be completed each year your student attends West High.  Families are welcome to come to West High and use a computer to complete online registration.

Please note that completing Online Registration does not enroll your student—Online Registration and Enrollment are two separate steps.

    Step 2: Submit Required Documents

    • Enrollment Checklist (provided by West High School)
    • Birth Certificate or equivalent
    • Immunization Records
    • Two proofs of address (different businesses, dated within 3 months)
    • Transcripts
    • IEP / 504 Plan (if applicable)
    • Custody / Power of Attorney documents (if applicable)
    • Proof of withdrawal (if coming from another school)

All documentation can be submitted either in person at the main office or emailed to Cindy Peterson, our amazing Enrollment Secretary, at Cindy.Peterson@slcschools.org. If visiting in person, please call 801-578-8500 to ensure someone is available. Once Online Registration and all required documents are received, your student will be officially enrolled and connected with their grade-level counselor to review courses and register for classes. Counselors are assigned by student grade level and last name.

If you are missing any documents required for enrollment, please get in touch with us for assistance at (801)578-8500 or email our incredible Enrollment Secretary at cindy.peterson@slcschools.org.

    Optional Programs

    • Fee Waiver for school fees – Apply online through Online Registration or in person with your student’s grade-level administrator. Bring supporting documents such as an EBT card, two recent pay stubs, or last year’s W-2.
    • SchoolCafe / Lunch Account – Apply for free/ reduced lunch and manage your student’s meals through the SchoolCafe website.

    Items of Note

    • Students whose first language is not English may be required to complete a brief assessment with the Multi-Language Learner (MLL) department. This test determines whether the student qualifies for language support services and must be completed before meeting with a counselor to choose classes.
    • If your student moves outside West High's boundaries and is unenrolled for any reason, an approved Open Enrollment application is required to re-enroll.
    • If you wish to withdraw your student, please notify us so we can unenroll them properly and avoid dual enrollment. The official withdrawal process may apply if the school year has already begun.

  • Step 1: Apply for Open Enrollment (Required)

Families living outside West High boundaries must apply and be approved through the Salt Lake City School District’s School Choice/ Open Enrollment process before their student can be enrolled.

To apply, visit the district’s School Choice website and submit the online application using a valid email address. All communication from the district is sent only through email.

    • You will receive a first email confirming your application and the timeframe for receiving a second email with the school’s decision.
    • A second email will notify you whether your student is accepted or denied.
    • If accepted, you confirm the invitation before your student can be enrolled.

A student will not be enrolled at West High until Open Enrollment has been approved and accepted. Once a student is accepted, families may begin the enrollment process.

Step 2: Complete Online Registration (Required)

This process collects contact information, emergency contacts, checkout permissions, and confirms acknowledgment of school policies, including dress code, attendance, school fee waivers, and lunch programs. The Magnet Gifted & Talented program at West High is available to students who have been assessed and identified as eligible by the Salt Lake City School District. Students approved by the district may attend West High for 7th and 8th grade as part of the Magnet program.

All Magnet eligibility, testing, and placement are managed by the district Magnet Gifted & Talented Department. Families interested in testing, determining eligibility, or learning more may contact Maggie Nickerson at maggie.nickerson@slcschools.org at the district office or visit the Magnet Gifted & Talented webpage. For questions specific to West High’s Magnet program, families may contact our Magnet administrator, Shannon Wilson, at shannon.wilson@slcschools.org.

Once a student tests and is accepted, the district will send a Letter of Intent/School Choice to families, asking them to select a Magnet school (West High, Clayton Middle School, or Hillside Middle School). After a school is chosen, that school will then contact families with enrollment instructions. Families may also follow the steps below to complete and expedite enrollment.

Important: Magnet students who live outside West High's boundaries and wish to continue at West High for high school (grades 9–12) must submit an application and be approved through Open Enrollment. Please see our Families Outside of WHS Boundaries tab for instructions (above).

  • McKinney-Vento Services for Students Experiencing Homelessness

Students experiencing homelessness may be eligible for services through the McKinney-Vento Act. A student’s living situation determines eligibility. Students are considered eligible if they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, including situations such as:

    • Sharing housing with others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason
    • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds because adequate alternative housing is unavailable
    • Staying in emergency or transitional shelters
    • Having a primary nighttime residence that is not designed for regular sleeping, such as living in a car, park, abandoned building, or substandard housing

Eligible students have the right to:

    • Receive a free, appropriate public education
    • Enroll immediately, even if they lack documents normally required for enrollment
    • Attend classes while the school gathers necessary documents
    • Enroll in the local school or continue attending their school of origin (the school they attended when permanently housed or were last enrolled)
    • Received transportation to and from the school of origin

Documentation for eligibility must be submitted each year. For more information, please visit the McKinney-Vento website.

The Salt Lake City School District implements fees for all students enrolling in a school within the SLCSD. Depending on your students' registered courses and chosen athletics and activities, they may incur additional fees. Fee schedules are under SLCSD Board Policy S-10 and can be found at the following links: School Fees and Athletic Fees.

Outstanding fees can be paid online by credit card at MySchoolFees (after registering and logging in), in person with cash or check to Valda Shockley, our treasurer, or by setting up a payment plan in person or by email to valda.shockley@slcschools.org.

All families may apply to have school and athletic fees waived by completing a Fee Waiver Application and submitting the required documentation to their grade-level administrator for review and approval. This can be done through Online Registration or in person with one of our office staff.

A student is eligible for a fee waiver if:

    • The student qualifies for free lunch under USDA regulations.
    • The student receives SSI.
    • The student’s family receives TANF (EBT, Medicaid).
    • The student is in foster care; or
    • The student is in state custody.

Optional purchases are not covered by fee waivers, even if your student qualifies for assistance. This may include items such as West High Gear, student parking passes, Yearbooks, and West High Graduation Products. There may also be other optional items throughout the year that are not waivable.

In addition, fines for damaged, lost, or stolen student laptops cannot be waived. These fines apply to all students, regardless of fee waiver status.

If you are having a financial emergency caused by a job loss, major illness, or other substantial loss of income beyond your control, your child might be eligible for a fee waiver even if other eligibility criteria are not met.

  • Breakfast and Lunch Information

Meal costs are separate from school fees. For questions about meals, Child Nutrition policies, or to apply for Free/Reduced-Price meals, please visit the Child Nutrition website or apply through SchoolCafe. If you don’t already have an account, you will need to create one. A new application must be submitted each year for Free/Reduced-Price meals.

To pay for your student’s meals, you can:

    • Set up an account online using a credit card through SchoolCafe
    • Pay in person with cash or check directly to the cafeteria staff

    Important Information

    • Students will be charged extra for second meals or for taking extra items. (Even students who qualify for free lunch are charged if they take extra items (like an extra milk) or a second meal.)
    • Families who qualify for Free/Reduced-Price meals will receive benefits beginning the day their application is submitted. Meal payments made before approval cannot be refunded or applied retroactively.

SchoolCafe Account Setup and How to Manage Payments

For more information or help completing the free and reduced meal application, contact the Child Nutrition department by email at freeandreduced@slcschools.org or by phone at (801) 974-8380.

  • We are sad to see you go! To withdraw your student from West High, families must complete our official withdrawal process. This prevents dual enrollment, protects your student’s grades, and avoids delays in sending records to their next school. To begin, please follow the steps below:

    • A Secondary Withdrawal Form must be picked up from the main office for your student to collect all applicable signatures listed on their Withdrawal Form; signatures are needed from teachers, their grade-level counselors, their grade-level administrator, the treasurer, etc. With notice, we may be able to email the form to teachers and staff, reducing the time required to gather signatures.
    • All items belonging to West High, such as the school’s laptop and charger, textbooks, library books, ID Card, etc., must be returned. Your student will not be able to get the necessary signatures without returning these items.
    • Once the Secondary Withdrawal Form is returned to the main office with all necessary signatures, the student will be given our withdrawal information to take to their next school and will be unenrolled from West.

We will not be able to withdraw your student or fulfill records requests from your student’s next school without your student completing these necessary steps.
