West Students Compete in Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair
Three West High Students (Aadhi Umamageswaren, Aidan Yu and Mingchuan Cheng) competed at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair administered by the Society for Science May 11-17, 2024 held in Los Angeles, California.
Aadhi Umamageswaren (10th grade, West High) won 4th place in her category, Animal Sciences. She was awarded $500 for her work, Visualizing Animal Vocalizations for Species Identification (Silhouettes of Marine Mammal Sounds). Aadhi developed a novel way to identify ocean animals by using resonance patterns on Chladni Plates. She would play the acoustic recordings of wildlife and to make salt patterns on plates. These patterns were often better at identifying animals than other means and her work could help identify currently unknown specimens in large databases.
